If you want to increase your chances of catching a guy’s attention using colour, what are the colours that attract men the most?
Believe it or not, there are colours that are more attractive to both men and women than others because different colours evoke different emotional responses.
For example, blue is a colour used by many hospitals because it evokes a feeling of trust.
Green symbolises growth, harmony and freshness.
Purple is the combination of the stability of blue and the energy of the colour red.
Now, before we look at some important colours that attract men, it’s important to think back to the first post in the series that talked about the fact that men are visual.
If you want to get a man’s attention, you need to be seen.
And there are many different ways to increase your “visibility” among which using colour is one of them.
A healthy fit female will always get a man’s attention.
I know it ain’t fair, but that’s just how it is.
The same with short skirts or tight pants.
Guys will look.
Not always for the right reasons, but we will look … because men are visually inclined.
I also know that it might paint men as being very shallow, but be it as it may, it is what it is.
In fact, one of the interesting conundrums in the animal kingdom is the fact that females are usually far more “dull” than their male counterparts.
Scientists have long considered and researched various reasons for this interesting phenomenon, wondering why.
One theory is that since males compete for the attention of females for procreation, standing out less as females, in a sense, restricts “sexual harassment” or too much attention from males.
So, in the wild, Mother Nature came up with her own plan to “manage” the fact that males are visual.
It would have been simply too much for the females it seems.
Which is fair enough.
But, back to humans … us.
If you want a man’s attention (yes, also your husband’s), you need to “exploit” this inborn trait.
Being “invisible” in a man’s world is not a good thing.
Not if you want him to notice you and get his attention.
And as I said before, using colour is a very natural and simple way of becoming more visible.
But the question is, what are the colours that attract men most?
And perhaps, women as well.
Now, if you haven’t guessed it already, the colour that most men and women find attractive is the colour red. (1,2)
Red is the colour of fire and blood, often associated with sexy red lips or the ravages of war.
Both create strong emotional reactions and a bond that is often irrepressible.
Consequently, if you want to wear a colour that attracts men and help them to remember YOU, then the most obvious choice to lead with, is the colour red.
However, and this is a very important note, you can overdo it when it comes to the colour red.
So, a good rule of thumb if you choose to go with red, is moderation.
Less is more in this instance.
Don’t do the red dress, red necklace and red lips, even if they are all in different shades because it will be too much.
Instead, choose one place, your lips or your dress, and make it count.
A good tip is to pick the place that elevates your best asset.
If you don’t have full lips it’s best to use the red dress that flatters your figure.
Now, perhaps at this stage, I should use a personal example.
When I saw my wife the first time (before I knew who she was) she dyed her hair bright red.
She was also super fit and has a beautiful face (especially her eyes and smile), but it was her red hair that caught my attention the first time.
I saw her from afar so couldn’t see her well, but her red hair stood out like a fire in the night.
I couldn’t miss her.
In fact, a lot of guys couldn’t miss her.
She used to work for this really big and busy media company when I met her, and “word on the street” was (that’s code for her close girlfriend told me) very few guys could walk past her without turning around to have a glance.
Now, fortunately for me, once she met me none of that mattered anymore, as she thought I wasn’t too bad either, so I got to put a ring on her finger a few months later.
Why am I sharing this with you?
Because by dying her hair red, whether she knew it or not, she actually accentuated her very nice face and in the process highlighted one of her greatest assets.
In hindsight, chances are very slim that I would have noticed her the way I did back in the day if it wasn’t for her very bright red hair.
It’s very possible indeed.
Sometimes all you need to catch someone’s attention is to stand out a bit more than someone else, and before you know it, Bob could be your uncle.
The point is, using red to highlight your best asset(s) instead of overdoing it is a good strategy.
Now, also remember that using a colour like red can highlight parts of you that you don’t want to make stand out.
Just keep that in mind.
If you’re self-conscious about your figure or body type or don’t feel comfortable wearing red, don’t wear red.
Instead, if you have a nice smile, rather go for red lipstick (moderation) to drive attention to your mouth.
With that being said, one colour that you should never wear is yellow because, for the most part, very few people find the colour yellow attractive.
It’s simply not memorable, or at least not for any of the right reasons.
So, yellow is not your friend.
It is not a colour that attracts men.
But what about other colours?
Well, other colours that men and women find attractive on the opposite sex include colours like blue, black and purple.
These are all good colours to go with if you want to stand a chance of being perceived as attractive.
Furthermore, black and red are a great pairing of colours.
Personally, I love the pairing of black and red.
Adding to what I said before about the colour red, it can definitely increase your partner’s heart rate because it is sexy, sassy, bold and daring.
And men, for the most part, are attracted to people who are confident in their abilities, and few things say that you are confident like red does.
We also know that, aside from yellow, men also find brown to be unattractive on women and women aren’t all that thrilled with pink on men.
Here is a fun fact: the colour worn by more women on their first date is red and the colour more men wear is grey or black.
So, what does all of this mean for you?
Simply this – when you’re trying to be more visible, make a good impression, or be remembered, what COLOUR you wear is just as important as WHAT you wear.
Because you better believe it – the colour makes a difference!
And here is a final tip (if you’re a woman on a date): if you are wearing red lipstick, don’t reapply it at the end of the evening.
Instead, layer on some lip gloss that makes for more kissable lips and won’t smear all over your date’s face.
Personally, I love glossy lips … just in case my wife’s reading this.
